THE AUTHOR

Wendell Mitchell Levi (1891 - 1976), a lifelong resident of Sumter, South Carolina, began raising pigeons in 1902 at the age of eleven.  His childhood hobby evolved into a 75 year passion for the study of pigeons and firsthand involvement with all aspects of breeding them.  He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1912 and the University of Chicago Law School in 1915.  He returned to Sumter to practice law, but the lure of the pigeon was always there.

During WWI, he was a first lieutenant in charge of the  pigeon section of the U. S. Army Signal Corps for the South Eastern Department and later served as an infantry captain in France.

He was co-founder, President and then Chairman of the Board (1923-1976) of the Palmetto Pigeon Plant, Sumter, South Carolina, which was and is one of the most progressive squab producers in the United States.  From 1927-1975 he was editor of the "Questions and Answers Section of the American Pigeon Journal and was President of the National Pigeon Association  from 1931-1933.

In a pre-internet era, he maintained numerous worldwide contacts with both scientists and pigeon fanciers.  Upon his death, he left his extensive pigeon library to the College of Charleston.  It was his hope that this collection would be available to anyone with an interest in pigeons.

THE PIGEON

THE PIGEON is, without a doubt, the best, most authoritative, English language publication on domesticated pigeons.  It belongs in every pigeon breeder's library from novice to expert.  This book, tome, has been in publication since 1941, and has seen no rivals.

THE PIGEON is the best American pigeon book ever.  Whether you are racing pigeons, showing pigeons, competing with rollers, or just enjoy pigeons or fine collectibles, this book will be a valuable addition to your library!

If ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIGEON BREEDS could be topped, it would be only by THE PIGEON and only Wendell Levi could have had enough knowledge and love of such a topic as pigeons.  Whatever your interest in pigeons ... you will find this a treasure trove to be valued more than most any book in your possession.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIGEON BREEDS

The ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIGEON BREEDS ... and THE PIGEON, both written by Wendell M. Levi,  are the two best pigeon books ever published.  Whether you are a novice, intermediate or advanced pigeon fancier, you will benefit highly... by reading the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIGEON BREEDS.

A beautiful book with hundreds of color pictures representing pigeons from around the world... No other book that I know of comes even close in terms of completeness.  For each race there is a section on origin, description, size, color and other comments.

Illustrated with over 800 photographs and nearly 800 pages long, this hard cover book is one of the finest ever printed on pigeons.  Also has chapters on care, color breeding, and history with humans.  A must for every pigeon owner's library.

MAKING PIGEONS PAY

MAKING PIGEONS PAY is a classic of the genre because it is not only very good, but also because it was written by Wendell Levi, the best known author about pigeons in the United States. He was associated with one of the largest squab farms his entire life, so not only had great academic credentials but first hand experience as well.

A good more than basic text on commercial squab production ... Includes such things as stock selection, dressing, sales ideas and more.  Wendell Levi was the acknowledged

American pigeon expert for most of the 20th century, and his material will live on for centuries more.

I have a library of squab-raising books ... I enjoy all of them, but MAKING PIGEONS PAY is the CLASSIC.  If you are interested in squab raising on a commercial scale, you will need MAKING PIGEONS PAY.
